VOSS HITS LIKE A TON OF BRICKS … Dan Voss Jr. Goes after world kick-boxing title Friday
For eight hours a day, you’ll find Dan Voss Jr. working as a contractor. Once his regular line of work is complete, Voss turns to a pugilistic pastime. With bear-like bulk – Voss is 6’ 2”, 228 pounds with a thick neck, broad shoulders and powerful arms – he becomes an animal caged in a roped ring. Kicking, punching and sweating. Running, lifting and sparring. Voss is a kick-boxer. And a darn good one at that. He proudly boasts that he was a black belt by the time he was a mere 19. That was back in 1975, just four days after he took up the sport of karate at a small studio in Santa Paula.
Voss feels that trainer Refugio Flores of the Flores Brothers Kenpo Karate Studio in Oxnard has prepared him well, both physically and mentally. “I feel confident,” he said. “With the training Refugio has given me – he’s really been training me hard – I don’t think the fight will last five rounds,: Flores has had Voss doing two-a-days. He enters the studio at noon every day and does calisthenics and bag-training for at least an hour and a half. On Tuesdays and Thursdays he spars. In the afternoons he runs. And always, he works on his mental attitude. “You can prepare yourself physically, but if you aren’t prepared mentally, it doesn’t mean a damn thing,” said Flores in a very controlled tone.
On Friday, Voss, who sports a 26-1 record, will fight Kevin Rosier of Las Vegas for the World Karate Association super-heavyweight title at the Santa Clara Marriott in San Jose. The fight will be perhaps the toughest physical challenge of Dan’s kick-boxing career.
